What should you know about scratching psoriasis?

Psoriasis creates inflamed areas that may feel itchy, dry, tight, or scaly. Fingernails can remove scale but also create tiny cuts, bleeding, and crusting. Repeated rubbing may keep the inflammation active and can produce new psoriasis spots where skin has been injured. Scratching does not mean the condition is spreading because of poor hygiene, and it does not identify the exact type of psoriasis on its own.

Keep nails short and use the pads of your fingers instead of nails if you must touch the area. Apply a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser after washing and whenever the skin feels tight. Cool compresses, loose clothing, and lukewarm rather than hot showers may reduce irritation. Do not pick off attached scale or apply steroid, tar, or other medicated products without advice suited to the site. A clinician can review whether your psoriasis treatment needs adjustment.

Seek prompt advice if scratched skin becomes increasingly painful, warm, swollen, wet, or covered with spreading crust, or if you feel unwell. Arrange a dermatology review when itching disrupts sleep, plaques are rapidly changing, or home care is not controlling the urge to scratch. Urgent assessment is appropriate for widespread redness with feeling very ill, or sudden blistering or pus.

Ask which treatment is suitable for the affected body site, how to moisturise around medicated treatment, and whether the appearance suggests infection or another skin problem. Mention any bleeding, sleep disturbance, joint stiffness, or new areas that appeared after skin injury.
