SCC lung cancer: what to know

Squamous cell carcinoma begins in cells lining parts of the airways. A pathology report uses the term SCC to describe the cancer’s cell type; it does not by itself describe how far the cancer has spread or which treatment is suitable. Doctors combine the biopsy result with scans, examination, lung function, symptoms, and medical history.

A hoarse voice, cough, chest discomfort, breathlessness, or coughing blood can occur with lung conditions, including lung cancer, but symptoms alone cannot establish SCC. If the disease has spread, treatment planning may also consider areas such as the brain or bones.

The team may recommend tissue testing and scans to confirm the diagnosis and stage. Genomic tumour profiling can examine tumour characteristics that may help guide treatment choices. Depending on the findings, care may include surgery such as lung lobectomy, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or combinations of treatments. Supportive care can help with breathlessness, pain, nutrition, sleep, and emotional strain throughout treatment.

Bring your pathology report and scan questions to the oncology appointment. Tell the team about smoking or vaping, medicines, allergies, prior treatments, and changes in breathing. Ask who coordinates appointments and how treatment effects will be monitored.

Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, sudden weakness, severe chest pain, or coughing up a large amount of blood. Contact the oncology team promptly for fever during treatment, rapidly worsening cough, new neurological symptoms, inability to keep fluids down, or uncontrolled pain. Early assessment can identify problems that need immediate treatment.
