What should you know about a scar due to a burn?

After a burn closes, new collagen can make the area raised, firm, tight, itchy, darker, lighter, or redder than nearby skin. A scar crossing the neck, hand, elbow, knee, or another joint may pull as you move. Some scars gradually soften and flatten; others remain thick or continue to itch and tighten.

A clinician considers the burn history, current texture, colour, symptoms, and effect on movement. A healed scar is different from an open burn, so the immediate care and the later scar plan are not the same.

Protect healed skin from friction and sun exposure, keep it moisturised if the surface is closed, and avoid picking or forcefully stretching it. Gentle movement can help preserve function, but painful stretching should be reviewed by a clinician or therapist.

Treatment may include silicone-based care, pressure therapy, injections, laser treatment, or surgery according to the scar’s features. Fractional laser treatment can be considered for selected texture or stiffness concerns; scar revision surgery or a skin graft may be discussed when structure or movement is significantly affected.

Get prompt care for an area that is open, increasingly red or hot, draining, rapidly swollen, or accompanied by fever. Seek urgent assessment after a fresh burn involving the face, hands, feet, genitals, a major joint, or a large area, or if breathing may have been affected.
