What should you know about scar after burn?

Burns can damage different skin depths. A healed area may become darker or lighter, firm, raised, indented, tight, itchy, or sensitive. A scar crossing a joint can restrict movement as it contracts. Colour and texture may continue to mature, so an early appearance does not always show the final pattern.

A scar that becomes thick, increasingly tight, ulcerated, or painful deserves assessment. The clinician will examine the scar, ask about healing and function, and consider whether symptoms come from active inflammation, contracture, or mature scar tissue.

Once the wound is fully closed, protect it from sun, moisturise as advised, and avoid scratching or friction. Gentle movement may help preserve function when a clinician or therapist recommends it. Do not apply home acids, bleaching products, or unprescribed steroid creams to a healing burn.
