Short answer

Scalp tightness with a headache can come from muscle tension, stress, dehydration, illness, or irritation around the sinuses.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it may mean

A pressure-like feeling across the scalp or forehead often occurs when muscles in the scalp, neck, jaw, or shoulders remain tense. Long screen sessions, poor sleep, teeth clenching, and emotional strain can contribute. A blocked or inflamed nose may create pressure around the forehead and face, while a viral illness can bring headache with fever, tiredness, or congestion. Heat exposure and not drinking enough fluid can also cause headache. The symptom alone cannot identify one cause.

What you can do

Rest somewhere cool and quiet, drink fluids gradually, and take a break from screens. Gentle neck and shoulder movement, relaxed jaw muscles, and a warm or cool compress may reduce tightness. Keep a note of when the pain begins, where it is felt, possible triggers, and accompanying symptoms. A clinician can advise whether a suitable over-the-counter pain medicine is appropriate, especially if you have another illness, take regular medicines, or are pregnant.

When to seek care

Seek urgent help for a sudden severe headache, fainting, confusion, weakness, trouble speaking, a stiff neck with fever, repeated vomiting, vision loss, or a headache after a head injury. Arrange medical advice if headaches keep returning, steadily worsen, or come with persistent fever, marked facial pain, or signs of dehydration. Conditions such as Allergic Rhinitis, Chronic Sinusitis, Common Cold, COVID-19, Dehydration, Dengue Fever, Generalised Anxiety Disorder, and Heat Exhaustion can have overlapping symptoms.

Questions for your doctor

Could muscle tension, sinus symptoms, dehydration, or another condition explain this pattern? Which pain-relief option fits my health history? What changes should prompt an urgent review?
