Scalp Micropigmentation Procedure: What to Know

The practitioner first examines the scalp, discusses the desired hairline and matches a pigment tone. Using a specialised needle, they place dots at selected depths and spacing so the design blends with the person’s hair and skin. The work may be planned over multiple visits to refine shape, density and colour.

SMP is surface camouflage rather than hair restoration. It does not move follicles, reverse hair loss or treat an inflamed scalp. A medical assessment can help distinguish cosmetic concerns from a condition needing treatment.

Before the procedure, disclose allergies, previous reactions to tattoo pigments, medicines, bleeding concerns, scarring history and any active rash or infection. Agree on the hairline and ask how sterile supplies and pigment records are handled.

Afterward, follow the provider’s directions for cleansing and protecting the area. Avoid picking, vigorous rubbing and unapproved products while the skin heals. Limit activities that cause heavy sweating or prolonged water exposure if advised, and protect healed pigment from strong sun.

Get advice if redness, warmth, swelling, pain, itching or discharge is increasing, spreading or lasting longer than expected. Fever can signal infection. Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, faintness, widespread hives or swelling of the lips, tongue or throat.
