Short answer

A scalp micropigmentation procedure deposits tiny amounts of pigment in the scalp to imitate closely spaced hair follicles.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Technique
Controlled pigment dots in the scalp
Main goal
Imitate the look of short hair follicles
Preparation
Discuss allergies, medicines and scalp health

What happens during SMP

The practitioner first examines the scalp, discusses the desired hairline and matches a pigment tone. Using a specialised needle, they place dots at selected depths and spacing so the design blends with the person’s hair and skin. The work may be planned over multiple visits to refine shape, density and colour.

SMP is surface camouflage rather than hair restoration. It does not move follicles, reverse hair loss or treat an inflamed scalp. A medical assessment can help distinguish cosmetic concerns from a condition needing treatment.

Preparing and caring for the scalp

Before the procedure, disclose allergies, previous reactions to tattoo pigments, medicines, bleeding concerns, scarring history and any active rash or infection. Agree on the hairline and ask how sterile supplies and pigment records are handled.

Afterward, follow the provider’s directions for cleansing and protecting the area. Avoid picking, vigorous rubbing and unapproved products while the skin heals. Limit activities that cause heavy sweating or prolonged water exposure if advised, and protect healed pigment from strong sun.

When to seek care

Get advice if redness, warmth, swelling, pain, itching or discharge is increasing, spreading or lasting longer than expected. Fever can signal infection. Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, faintness, widespread hives or swelling of the lips, tongue or throat.

Questions for your doctor

Who will perform each stage of the procedure? What pigment and equipment will be used? How will my hairline be mapped? What should I stop before treatment, and which symptoms during healing require an examination?

Questions people ask

Does the procedure restore hair?

No. It changes the visible appearance of the scalp and does not create follicles or new hair growth.

Why might more than one visit be planned?

Staged visits can allow the practitioner to assess healing and refine the hairline, density or pigment tone.
