Scalp Cherry Angioma: What You Should Know

Cherry angiomas can look bright red, deep red, or purplish and may be flat or raised. On the scalp, a comb, hat, or scratching can catch a raised spot and make it bleed. Appearance alone cannot confirm that every red scalp mark is a cherry angioma, so a clinician may inspect it closely before treatment.

Removal is generally considered when a spot repeatedly catches, bleeds, becomes bothersome, or is cosmetically unwanted. Removal treats the visible lesion; it does not prevent other vascular spots from appearing elsewhere.

Do not cut, tie off, burn, or pick at the spot at home. Arrange a skin examination if you are unsure what it is. A clinician may discuss pulsed dye laser treatment or electrosurgery, depending on the spot’s appearance, size, elevation, and location. Follow aftercare instructions and protect the treated area from rubbing while it heals.

Book an assessment for a spot that changes in colour, shape, or size, bleeds without clear friction, crusts repeatedly, or becomes persistently painful. After removal, seek care for bleeding that does not settle with direct pressure, increasing redness, pus, fever, or worsening pain. Sudden swelling with breathing difficulty needs urgent care.

Ask whether the spot has the typical features of a cherry angioma, whether it needs examination before removal, which method fits its location, and what bleeding, pigment, or scarring changes to watch for during healing.
