Salt and sugar solution for adults: what to know

How the structures involved in Dehydration differ from normal

Short answer

A correctly prepared salt and sugar solution can help adults replace water and electrolytes lost through diarrhoea or vomiting, but inaccurate mixtures may be harmful.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Key feature
The balance of water, sugar, and salts supports fluid absorption.
Safe preparation
Use a measured product and follow its water instructions exactly.

What the solution does

Oral rehydration solution combines water with carefully balanced sugar and salts. This helps the intestine absorb fluid more effectively than plain water alone during some illnesses. It is useful for fluid loss linked with gastroenteritis and may be considered after heavy sweating, but it does not cure the infection or the underlying cause.

A homemade drink can contain too much salt or sugar if measured casually. That can irritate the gut or disturb the body’s electrolyte balance. People with kidney disease, heart failure, diabetes, or a prescribed fluid limit need tailored advice before using one.

Using rehydration safely

Prefer a pharmacy oral rehydration product and follow its packet instructions exactly, including the required volume of clean water. Sip slowly and often; large drinks may trigger more vomiting. Keep taking small amounts even if appetite is low, and resume ordinary food as tolerated. Do not add extra salt, sugar, juice, or milk to the prepared solution, and discard it according to the product instructions.

When to seek care

Get prompt medical help if vomiting prevents drinking, diarrhoea is severe or persistent, urine becomes very reduced, or you develop faintness, confusion, marked weakness, or worsening abdominal pain. Fever with significant illness, blood in stool or vomit, or signs of heat exhaustion also need assessment. A solution cannot safely replace urgent treatment when dehydration is advanced.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which product is suitable, how to take it with your medicines, and whether your kidney, heart, or blood-sugar conditions change the plan. Explain how long vomiting or diarrhoea has lasted and how often you are urinating.

Questions people ask

Can I improvise the ingredients?

Avoid casual estimates. An incorrectly mixed drink may contain too much salt or sugar; a pharmacy product is safer to prepare.

Should I drink it quickly?

No. Small, frequent sips are often easier to keep down when vomiting is present.
