What should you know about salpingitis and hydrosalpinx?

Inflammation can scar the inside or outside of a tube. Scarring may narrow or close the passage, allowing fluid to collect and create a hydrosalpinx. Causes can include pelvic infection or previous pelvic inflammation, but the diagnosis requires assessment rather than symptom matching.

Some people have pelvic or lower abdominal pain, unusual bleeding or discharge, pain during sex, or difficulty becoming pregnant; others have no clear symptoms. Examination and tests may include a pregnancy test, infection testing and imaging. A fluid-filled tube can matter when planning pregnancy because it changes the route between an ovary and the uterus.

Arrange a gynaecology review if symptoms persist, fertility is a concern or imaging has mentioned a swollen tube. Treatment depends on the cause and may include antibiotics for an active infection, while established scarring may need a separate discussion about surgery or fertility treatment.

Do not self-start leftover antibiotics. Until an infection is assessed, follow advice about sex and partner testing. Ask whether pelvic inflammatory disease needs evaluation, and discuss how a hydrosalpinx could affect attempts to conceive or the suitability of IVF.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or rapidly worsening pelvic pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, fever with feeling very unwell, repeated vomiting or possible pregnancy with pain or bleeding. These signs can have causes that need prompt examination, including an ectopic pregnancy.

Ask what caused the tube changes, whether infection is active, what tests are needed, whether both tubes are involved and how the findings affect fertility. Discuss antibiotics, surgery, IVF and the follow-up plan in terms of your symptoms and pregnancy goals.
