What should you know about saddleback fever dengue?

Dengue can cause a high fever with headache, muscle aches, joint pain, chills, nausea or marked tiredness. A temporary drop in temperature does not by itself show that the illness has ended. The fever pattern can overlap with other infections, so it cannot diagnose dengue on its own. A person with dengue may also develop easy bruising or bleeding signs as the illness changes.

A clinician may ask when the fever began, whether it returned, recent mosquito exposure, travel, medicines, fluid intake and urine output. Examination and tests may be needed to assess hydration, blood changes and other causes.

Arrange prompt medical advice if dengue is possible, especially after travel or mosquito exposure. Rest, take frequent fluids if you can drink, and record temperatures and symptoms. Avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatory medicines unless a healthcare professional specifically advises them. Reduce mosquito bites while feverish by using screens, clothing and suitable repellent.

Seek emergency care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding from the nose or gums, blood in vomit or stool, unusual sleepiness, confusion, breathing difficulty, cold or clammy skin, fainting, or very little urine. Warning signs can appear as the fever settles, so a returning or improving fever should not delay assessment.
