What should you know about rug burn scar?

A rug burn is an abrasion caused by rubbing against a rough surface. Superficial damage may settle with basic wound care, while deeper injury can heal with a raised, indented or discoloured scar. Redness, tenderness and crusting belong to the healing phase and do not by themselves show the final appearance.

Scar tissue can feel tight or itchy and may restrict movement when it crosses a joint. New scars can also darken with sun exposure, especially in more pigmented skin, so protection matters after the surface has closed.

Rinse a fresh abrasion gently with clean running water, remove visible dirt without digging, and cover it with a clean non-stick dressing. Keep the wound moist according to clinical advice and avoid picking. Once the skin is fully closed, moisturising and silicone-based scar care may be discussed, together with sun protection. Do not apply harsh antiseptics to a raw wound unless instructed.

For a settled scar, a dermatologist can assess texture, colour, itch and tightness. Options may include fractional laser treatment, scar revision surgery or a skin graft, depending on depth, position, movement and the amount of healthy surrounding skin.

Have the injury assessed for deep or contaminated wounds, embedded grit, loss of sensation, severe pain, difficulty moving a nearby joint, spreading redness, pus or fever. Prompt care is also sensible when a scar becomes increasingly raised, painful, itchy or tight, or changes after it had been stable. Urgent attention is needed for uncontrolled bleeding or rapidly worsening infection signs.

Ask how deep the abrasion appears, which dressing is suitable, when scar massage or silicone care can begin, how to protect the area from sunlight, and whether treatment is intended to improve movement, symptoms or appearance.
