What should you know about a round lump on your neck?

Neck lumps may arise from lymph nodes, the thyroid, skin, muscle, or other soft tissues. A neck lump is a common presentation of several non-cancerous conditions, and it can also be a presentation of head and neck cancer, lymphoma, thyroid cancer, or cancer of unknown primary. The appearance of a lump cannot diagnose any of these conditions.

A clinician will ask about recent infections, dental or throat symptoms, smoking or alcohol exposure, medicines, and how the lump has changed. They will check its position, size, tenderness, firmness, mobility, and nearby areas.

Book an appointment if the lump remains, grows, becomes firm or fixed, or appears without a clear recent infection. Record when it began and whether you notice fever, night sweats, unexplained weight change, hoarseness, mouth changes, or swallowing problems. Avoid attempting to drain or massage it.

Arrange prompt review for a persistent painless lump, a lump that is enlarging, or one accompanied by ongoing fever, night sweats, weight loss, voice change, or difficulty swallowing. Seek emergency help if swelling interferes with breathing, fluids cannot be swallowed, or severe symptoms develop suddenly.
