What should you know about round hypertrophic scar?

These scars can feel firm, thick, itchy, sore, or tight. They often follow an injury, operation, piercing, burn, or inflamed skin lesion. Unlike a keloid, a hypertrophic scar generally remains within the edges of the original wound, although only an examination can distinguish similar raised growths reliably. A new lump, pigment change, ulcer, or persistent bleeding deserves separate assessment rather than being assumed to be scar tissue.

Protect the area from friction and sun, avoid picking, and follow wound-care instructions if the injury is recent. Treatment depends on thickness, symptoms, location, and how mature the scar is. Options may include steroid injection into the skin, fractional laser treatment, silicone-based care, or surgery in selected cases. A specialist should discuss the possibility that a scar can recur after treatment.

Arrange review if a scar grows beyond the wound edge, becomes increasingly painful, opens, drains, bleeds, or limits movement. Seek prompt care for redness and warmth spreading around a healing wound or for fever. A scar that changes after being stable also warrants examination.
