Rough Spots on Skin: What to Know

Raised spots with a central plug may fit pimples or acne. Bumps around hairs, especially after shaving or sweating, may fit folliculitis or razor bumps. Roughness around the mouth with burning or small clustered bumps can occur with perioral dermatitis. Persistent flushing with acne-like spots may occur with rosacea. Hormonal acne often follows a recurring pattern around the jawline or lower face, but a clinician must interpret the whole picture.

Cleanse gently, avoid picking, and pause new fragranced or abrasive products until the pattern settles. Use non-comedogenic moisturiser and daily sun protection. Shave with the grain using a clean razor if shaving triggers bumps. LED light therapy may be discussed for selected acne concerns, but it does not replace a diagnosis or treatment for every rough spot.

Book an assessment for spots that persist, scar, bleed, hurt deeply, or spread despite simple care. Seek prompt help for rapidly increasing swelling, fever, eye involvement, or severe facial pain. A changing pattern after a medicine or cosmetic product should also be reviewed.

Ask whether the spots are acne, folliculitis, razor bumps, perioral dermatitis, or rosacea, and which active ingredients to avoid. Describe shaving, cycle-related changes, flushing, itch, pain, scarring, and every product applied to the area.
