Rough Cracked Heels: Causes and Care

Short answer
Rough cracked heels usually result from thick, dry skin that splits under pressure, but infection or illness can also need assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main mechanism
- Dry, thick skin splitting under heel pressure
- Protective habit
- Moisturise after bathing and wear supportive footwear
Why heel skin splits
Heels bear repeated pressure and may develop a hard rim of skin. When that skin is dry and less flexible, standing and walking can open it into painful fissures. Athlete's foot may cause scaling, peeling, or itching around and between the toes and can also affect the soles. Bleeding, inflammation, or recurrent fissures deserve a clinical review.
Heel care at home
After a short warm soak or shower, pat dry and apply a rich emollient to the heel, concentrating on the edges of the cracks. Covering moisturised heels with cotton socks overnight can reduce friction. Wear supportive, closed-back footwear and avoid cutting thick skin with blades. A pharmacist or dermatologist can advise on a suitable keratolytic product and manage suspected fungal scaling.
When to seek help
Arrange care if cracks are deep, bleeding, infected-looking, or painful enough to change how you walk. Seek prompt medical advice for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, or fever. People with diabetes, poor circulation, reduced sensation, or immune problems should have foot cracks assessed early.
Questions to ask
Ask whether the fissures are driven by dryness, pressure, or Athlete's Foot, and which emollient is suitable. Mention bleeding, itching, foot conditions, diabetes, circulation concerns, and the footwear you use most.

Questions people ask
Can I use a pumice stone?
Gentle smoothing may help after bathing, but stop if skin is sore or cracked and never remove living skin aggressively.
Why do my heel cracks keep returning?
Persistent dryness, pressure, open-backed shoes, or Athlete's Foot can keep the skin from staying flexible.
