What should you know about root cause of dandruff?

Dandruff is not simply caused by poor hygiene. Scalp oil, individual sensitivity, and the activity of normal skin yeast can combine to produce flaking and irritation. Seborrheic dermatitis is a related condition that may cause more persistent inflammation, greasy scale, and involvement of the eyebrows, ears, or sides of the nose. Dry air, irritating products, infrequent washing, or frequent washing can make symptoms more noticeable, but they do not explain every case. Itchy scalp and flaky scalp are symptoms, not proof of one particular cause.

Use a medicated shampoo according to its label or your clinician’s instructions, allowing it enough contact with the scalp before rinsing. Different active ingredients work in different ways, so a clinician may suggest changing or alternating products when one approach is insufficient. Avoid scratching, very hot water, and fragranced products that sting. If scale is thick, widespread, or recurrent, a dermatologist can check for seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema, or infection and may recommend topical antifungal treatment.

Seek assessment when flaking is accompanied by hair loss, painful cracks, bleeding, pus, marked swelling, or thick plaques. Arrange a review if symptoms persist despite careful use of an appropriate medicated shampoo, spread beyond the scalp, or interfere with sleep. A child with extensive scale or broken hairs needs medical assessment because scalp ringworm requires specific treatment.
