What should you know about rituximab and ankylosing spondylitis?

Ankylosing Spondylitis can cause inflammatory spinal or pelvic pain, Morning Joint Stiffness, and reduced movement. Rituximab targets a type of immune cell and is delivered by infusion, but treatment choices depend on the exact inflammatory condition, prior medicines, infection history, vaccination status, and other health factors. Joint Stiffness or Reduced Range of Motion can also arise from mechanical problems, so these symptoms do not establish that rituximab is appropriate. A rheumatologist should connect the examination and diagnosis with the treatment plan.

Ask why rituximab is being considered, what alternatives exist, and how response and infection risk will be monitored. Tell the care team about recent infections, hepatitis or tuberculosis screening history, vaccinations, allergies, pregnancy plans, and every medicine or supplement. Do not delay or repeat an infusion without the prescribing team. Continue an agreed movement plan: Physiotherapy, Exercise Therapy, or Hydrotherapy may support posture, flexibility, and daily function alongside medical care.

Contact the infusion or rheumatology team promptly for fever, chills, persistent cough, painful urination, unusual bruising, or a wound that is not healing. During or soon after an infusion, urgent help is needed for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, widespread rash, faintness, or chest tightness. Seek urgent assessment for new limb weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or severe back pain after trauma.
