Ringworm on the hip: what to know
Updated

Short answer
Ringworm on the hip is a contagious fungal rash that may itch, scale and expand outward from a clearer centre.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common setting
- Warmth, moisture and friction can irritate hip skin
- Typical edge
- Scaly and more defined than the centre
- Spread control
- Dry the area and avoid sharing clothing or towels
How it may appear on the hip
The hip can stay warm and damp beneath close clothing, which may encourage fungal growth. Ringworm may look like a circular or oval patch with a sharper, scaly edge and a less affected centre. Friction can make itching more noticeable, and scratching can spread the rash to nearby skin. A rash in this area may instead be intertrigo, eczema, contact dermatitis or another infection, so shape and location do not provide a diagnosis by themselves.
Care while arranging advice
Gently wash the area and dry it thoroughly, especially after sweating. Choose loose, breathable clothing, change damp garments promptly, and avoid scratching. Do not share towels or clothing, and wash items that touch the rash. A clinician or pharmacist can advise on topical antifungal treatment and its proper duration. Avoid steroid-only creams unless a clinician has recommended them for a confirmed diagnosis; they can mask fungal changes. Widespread, recurrent or difficult-to-reach infection may need oral antifungal treatment.
When to seek care
Arrange an examination if the patch spreads, becomes recurrent, affects the groin or several sites, or fails to improve with suitable care. Get prompt help for increasing pain, warmth, pus, marked swelling, fever or red streaks. Seek advice sooner if you have diabetes, reduced immunity, pregnancy, or a medicine that could interact with antifungal treatment.
Questions for your doctor
Does this hip rash look fungal or irritated by friction? Which treatment is appropriate for this location? How long should I continue it? What can prevent spread or recurrence in clothing and towels?

Questions people ask
Can hip ringworm spread to the groin?
It can spread to nearby skin, especially with scratching or ongoing moisture, so early care and keeping the area dry help.
Can I use a steroid cream for an itchy hip rash?
Do not use steroid cream alone on a suspected fungal rash; ask a clinician or pharmacist to select appropriate treatment.
