Ringworm on the hip: what to know

The hip can stay warm and damp beneath close clothing, which may encourage fungal growth. Ringworm may look like a circular or oval patch with a sharper, scaly edge and a less affected centre. Friction can make itching more noticeable, and scratching can spread the rash to nearby skin. A rash in this area may instead be intertrigo, eczema, contact dermatitis or another infection, so shape and location do not provide a diagnosis by themselves.

Gently wash the area and dry it thoroughly, especially after sweating. Choose loose, breathable clothing, change damp garments promptly, and avoid scratching. Do not share towels or clothing, and wash items that touch the rash. A clinician or pharmacist can advise on topical antifungal treatment and its proper duration. Avoid steroid-only creams unless a clinician has recommended them for a confirmed diagnosis; they can mask fungal changes. Widespread, recurrent or difficult-to-reach infection may need oral antifungal treatment.

Arrange an examination if the patch spreads, becomes recurrent, affects the groin or several sites, or fails to improve with suitable care. Get prompt help for increasing pain, warmth, pus, marked swelling, fever or red streaks. Seek advice sooner if you have diabetes, reduced immunity, pregnancy, or a medicine that could interact with antifungal treatment.
