Does ringworm cause diarrhoea?

Ringworm is caused by fungi growing in the outer skin and commonly produces scale, a changing border, or a rash. Diarrhoea involves the digestive system and may follow a stomach infection, food intolerance, medication, or another bowel problem. Having both at the same time does not show that one caused the other. If diarrhoea began after starting an oral antifungal, tell the prescriber because a medicine effect or another problem may need review. Do not stop prescribed treatment without advice.

Drink fluids regularly and choose simple foods if they are easier to tolerate. Wash hands carefully after using the toilet and before touching the rash or preparing food. Keep the skin patch dry and use separate towels. Record when the diarrhoea began, how often it occurs, recent foods, travel, sick contacts, and medicines. A clinician can assess the bowel symptoms separately and confirm whether the skin change is ringworm before recommending topical or oral antifungal treatment.

Get prompt medical help for blood or black stool, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, faintness, confusion, very little urine, or signs of dehydration. Arrange medical advice if diarrhoea continues, is severe, affects a young child or older adult, or follows a new medicine. Seek skin care for rapidly spreading redness, pus, fever, or significant pain around the rash.
