Can Dettol treat ringworm?

Ringworm is a contagious fungal infection that may cause an itchy, scaly or expanding rash with a clearer centre, although appearances vary. A skin rash can have many causes, so a clinician may check the location, pattern and response to treatment before confirming the diagnosis.

Dettol is a household antiseptic rather than a ringworm medicine. Applying it to broken or inflamed skin can cause burning, dryness or irritant dermatitis, which may obscure the original rash. Scratching can also damage the skin and make spread to other areas easier.

Do not apply Dettol to the rash. Keep the area clean and dry, wash hands after touching it, and do not share towels, clothing, razors or sports equipment. Wash clothing and towels regularly, and avoid covering the rash with an occlusive dressing unless advised.

A clinician or pharmacist may recommend topical antifungal treatment for a limited skin infection. Oral antifungal treatment may be considered when infection involves the scalp, nails, extensive areas or does not respond as expected. Follow the full directions even when the rash looks better.

Arrange medical review if the rash is on the scalp or nails, affects the face or genitals, spreads quickly, becomes painful, drains, or does not improve with appropriate antifungal care. Seek prompt help for fever, rapidly increasing redness or swelling, or signs of an allergic reaction after applying a product.
