Ringworm on black skin: what to know

Ringworm is a contagious fungal infection, not a worm. On deeply pigmented skin, redness may be subtle or appear as a dusky, violaceous, or hyperpigmented patch. The border can expand outward while the centre looks calmer, and fine scale may be easier to feel than see. Itching, burning, or tenderness can occur. Similar changes can come from contact dermatitis, psoriasis, heat rash, or cellulitis, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

After the infection settles, a darker or lighter mark may remain for a while. This colour change does not necessarily mean the fungus is still active; ongoing scale or an enlarging border is more concerning for persistence.

Keep the area clean, dry, and gently covered if it rubs against clothing. Do not share towels, clothing, hair tools, or bedding, and wash items that touch the patch. A pharmacist or clinician can help choose an antifungal medicine and confirm how long to use it. Avoid steroid cream alone unless a clinician specifically recommends it, because it can disguise or worsen a fungal rash. Do not apply bleaching products or scrub the skin to remove the colour.

Arrange a medical review if the patch is spreading, painful, draining, crusted, or not improving with appropriate antifungal care. Seek prompt help for fever, rapidly increasing warmth or swelling, severe pain, or involvement near the eye; these features can signal a different or more extensive problem. A clinician may examine scale from the edge or review other possible causes of skin redness.
