What Should You Know About Rigid Cystoscopy and Biopsy?

A rigid cystoscope is a firm, narrow instrument with a light and camera. It is passed through the urethra into the bladder so the clinician can examine the bladder lining directly. If an area looks unusual, a small instrument can remove tissue for laboratory examination. A biopsy can help identify the nature of a bladder change, but the appearance during the procedure does not provide the final diagnosis.

The procedure is commonly arranged with an anaesthetic, and the type depends on the planned examination, your health, and the clinician's assessment. The team should explain the anaesthetic, possible findings, and whether any treatment may be performed at the same time.

Follow the hospital's instructions about eating, drinking, medicines, and arriving for the appointment. Tell the team about blood-thinning medicines, allergies, pregnancy, urinary symptoms, and any previous difficulty with anaesthesia.
