Right side headache

Short answer
A right side headache may arise from migraine, tension, illness, dehydration, heat, or sinus pressure.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Pattern matters
- Throbbing pain, pressure, congestion, fever, and light sensitivity give useful clues
- Self-care
- Cool surroundings, fluids, food, rest, and reduced screen strain may help
- Urgency
- Sudden severe pain or neurological changes need emergency assessment
Possible explanations
One-sided pain can occur with migraine, especially when throbbing pain comes with nausea or sensitivity to light and sound. Tension in the scalp, jaw, neck, or shoulders may produce a pressure-like ache. Congestion, facial pressure, and a runny or blocked nose can accompany Allergic Rhinitis, Chronic Sinusitis, or a Common Cold. Fever or respiratory symptoms may occur with COVID-19. Heat exposure and poor fluid intake can contribute to Heat Exhaustion or Dehydration. Anxiety, poor sleep, skipped meals, and prolonged screen use may also trigger headache. The side alone does not identify the cause.
What to do now
Move to a cool, quiet place, drink fluids gradually, eat if you have missed a meal, and take a break from screens. Keep a brief record of onset, duration, severity, triggers, fever, congestion, visual symptoms, and medicines used. If headaches recur, a clinician can review your pattern and check your blood pressure, eyes, nerves, and neck. Avoid taking pain medicines more often than the label or clinician advises.
When to seek care
Seek emergency help for a sudden severe headache, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, confusion, fainting, seizure, a new vision loss, or a severe headache after a head injury. Get urgent advice for headache with high fever and a stiff neck, repeated vomiting, severe dehydration, or a rapidly worsening pattern. Arrange review if headaches are new, frequent, changing, or disrupting sleep and daily activities.
Questions for your doctor
Does my symptom pattern fit migraine or tension headache? Could illness, heat, fluids, vision, or medicines be contributing? What warning signs apply to me?

Questions people ask
Is a headache on one side always a migraine?
No. Migraine is one possibility; tension, illness, sinus symptoms, heat, dehydration, and other triggers can also cause one-sided pain.
Can dehydration cause a right-sided headache?
Dehydration can contribute to headache, often with thirst, dark urine, dizziness, or tiredness, but other causes remain possible.
