What should you know about right hand and leg swelling?

Local swelling can follow a sprain, sting, infection, or prolonged pressure. Vein problems may cause heaviness, visible veins, skin changes, or ankle swelling that worsens after standing. More widespread fluid retention can affect the legs and hands and may occur with heart or kidney disease. Weight can add strain and reduce movement, but it does not explain every new episode. Sudden swelling on one side, especially with warmth, redness, or pain, needs prompt medical assessment because a circulation problem is possible.

Remove tight rings, watches, and clothing from the swollen side. Keep the hand or leg gently moving and raise it when resting if that is comfortable. Do not massage a painful, warm, or suddenly swollen limb. Note the onset, progression, skin colour, pain, breathlessness, recent travel, injury, surgery, or new medicine. Do not change prescribed water tablets or restrict fluids without clinical advice.

Seek same-day care for sudden or increasing one-sided swelling, warmth, redness, marked tenderness, or swelling after an operation or long period of immobility. Call emergency services for breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, fainting, confusion, or a rapidly swollen face or tongue. Also arrange review if swelling persists or affects both limbs.
