Where right flank pain is located

The flank is the side of the body between the lower ribs and the hip, toward the back. Pain there may feel deep, sore, sharp, cramping, or tender on the surface. Muscle pain often changes with bending, twisting, lifting, or pressing the area. Kidney-related pain is usually deeper and may occur with urine changes. A kidney infection commonly presents with flank pain plus fever, chills, nausea, or painful urination. Kidney stones may produce severe waves that move toward the groin. The location alone cannot identify the cause.

Describe the exact spot with one finger, whether it is front, side, or back, and whether it spreads. Record when it began and what affects it, along with bowel and urinary symptoms.

For mild pain after activity, rest from the triggering movement, use gentle heat, and keep normally hydrated. Avoid heavy lifting until the pattern is clearer. Arrange a clinician review if pain persists, recurs, or is accompanied by urinary symptoms, fever, bowel changes, or unexplained weight loss. A physical examination and urine testing may help separate muscular pain from urinary causes.

Get urgent medical help for severe or rapidly increasing pain, fever with chills, repeated vomiting, fainting, a rigid abdomen, blood in urine or stool, or inability to pass urine. Prompt assessment is also needed when flank pain follows an injury or occurs with marked weakness or dehydration. Do not rely on the map of the pain alone if you feel seriously unwell.
