Right flank pain and gas: what to know

Trapped gas can stretch the bowel and cause bloating, burping, or cramping that shifts or improves after passing wind or stool. Pain from the abdominal wall may be tender with twisting or touch. Flank pain has other possible sources: a kidney infection commonly presents with flank pain and fever, chills, nausea, or painful urination, while kidney stones can cause severe waves of pain that travel toward the groin. Gas does not explain fever, blood in urine, fainting, or marked urinary changes.

Pay attention to whether the discomfort follows meals, improves after passing gas, or stays fixed in one spot. Also note bowel movements, urine symptoms, temperature, and whether movement changes the pain.

Walk gently, eat slowly, and try smaller meals while you observe the pattern. Reduce foods or fizzy drinks that reliably trigger bloating, and keep a simple record of meals, bowel movements, gas, and pain. Drink normally unless a clinician has advised a fluid restriction. Avoid repeatedly taking pain medicines or laxatives without checking that they are suitable for you, especially if the pain is unexplained or worsening.

Seek urgent care for sudden severe pain, a swollen or rigid abdomen, repeated vomiting, inability to pass stool or gas with increasing swelling, fainting, blood in urine or stool, or fever with chills. Arrange a medical review if the pain remains fixed, returns often, wakes you, or does not improve when bloating settles. Urinary burning or frequent urination alongside flank pain also warrants prompt assessment.
