Right-side flank pain: what should you know?

The flank is the area between the ribs and hip on the side of the back. Pain after lifting, twisting, coughing, or exercise may arise from muscle or the spine. Severe pain that comes in waves, moves toward the groin, or occurs with blood in urine can fit Kidney Stones. A steady ache with fever, chills, nausea, or painful urination can occur with Kidney Infection. A lower urinary infection can also cause urinary burning and frequency, although flank pain raises concern for involvement higher in the urinary tract.

Note when the pain began, whether movement changes it, and whether it travels. Record fever, urine colour, frequency, burning, nausea, or vomiting. Drink normally unless a clinician has advised fluid restriction; forcing large volumes may worsen some conditions. Avoid taking someone else’s antibiotics. Arrange medical review for new, persistent, or unexplained pain, particularly when urinary symptoms accompany it. A clinician may examine the abdomen and back and decide whether urine tests or imaging are needed.

Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening pain, fever with shaking chills, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, inability to pass urine, or blood in urine with clots. Pregnancy, a single functioning kidney, known kidney disease, or recent urinary procedures lowers the threshold for prompt assessment. Sudden pain with weakness or a rigid abdomen also needs emergency evaluation.

Ask whether the pattern suggests a Kidney Stone, Kidney Infection, Urinary Tract Infection, or a muscular cause. Ask which tests are needed, how to manage pain safely, how much to drink, and which changes require immediate review.
