What should you know about a rhomboid muscle tear?

Short answer
A rhomboid muscle tear is an injury to the muscles that draw the shoulder blade toward the spine, causing upper-back pain and pain with movement.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main location
- Between the shoulder blade and spine
- Common trigger
- Sudden pulling, lifting or repeated upper-body activity
- Useful first step
- Protect the area while keeping comfortable gentle movement
What it can mean
The rhomboid muscles sit between the spine and the inner edges of the shoulder blades. A sudden pull, forceful reaching movement, lifting, or repeated overhead activity can overstretch their fibres. Pain may be sharp at the moment of injury or become a persistent ache afterward. Tenderness, muscle spasm, stiffness and discomfort when turning the upper body or moving an arm are possible. A mild tear may settle gradually, while marked weakness, bruising or pain that keeps worsening deserves a clinical examination. Similar symptoms can occur with a broader muscle strain or referred pain, so the location alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.
What to do now
Stop the movement that triggered the pain and keep the shoulder gently mobile within a comfortable range. For the early phase, a wrapped cold pack may help soreness; avoid placing ice directly on skin. Rest from heavy lifting, forceful pulling and vigorous stretching, then return to activity in small steps as movement improves. A clinician or physiotherapist can check shoulder strength and guide exercises for mobility and gradual strengthening. Pain medicines are not suitable for everyone, especially with stomach, kidney, pregnancy or medicine-interaction concerns, so ask a pharmacist or clinician before using them. Do not massage aggressively over a newly injured, swollen area.
When to seek care
Arrange medical assessment if pain is severe, follows a significant impact, limits normal arm use, or does not begin improving with sensible rest. Seek urgent help for chest pressure, trouble breathing, faintness, sudden arm weakness, new numbness, or pain spreading into the jaw or arm. Immediate assessment is also appropriate for a visibly deformed shoulder, rapidly increasing swelling, or inability to move the arm after an injury. These warning signs can point to a problem beyond a rhomboid tear.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which movements are safe, whether you need imaging, how to pace a return to work or sport, and which exercises fit your current strength. Mention the exact mechanism of injury, any bruising or weakness, and medicines or health conditions that could affect pain treatment.

Questions people ask
Can a rhomboid tear heal without surgery?
Many smaller muscle injuries improve with activity modification, gradual rehabilitation and time, but examination is useful when pain or weakness is substantial.
Why does breathing sometimes hurt?
Deep breathing moves the ribs and upper back, which can tug sore muscles; new breathing difficulty or chest symptoms need urgent assessment.
