What should you know about rhinovirus headache?

A rhinovirus infection can inflame the nose and throat. Blocked nasal passages, coughing, fever, muscle tension, poor sleep, and not drinking enough can all add to head pain. Pressure around the face may occur with congestion, but persistent or severe facial pain needs a clinician’s review rather than an assumption of sinusitis. Allergic Rhinitis can also cause congestion and head discomfort, while Chronic Sinusitis follows a longer-lasting pattern.

A headache does not identify rhinovirus by itself. Common Cold, COVID-19, and other illnesses can overlap in their early symptoms. In the UAE, heat exposure and dehydration can also contribute, and the history of onset helps separate these possibilities.

Rest, drink fluids regularly, and choose light meals if appetite is reduced. Saline nasal care and a comfortably humid environment may ease congestion. Keep a note of when the headache starts, its location, intensity, and associated fever or nasal symptoms. Use an over-the-counter pain reliever only if it is suitable for you and follow the label; ask a pharmacist if you have another condition, take regular medicines, or are pregnant.

Get urgent help for a sudden severe headache, confusion, fainting, weakness, a stiff neck, a seizure, repeated vomiting, or difficulty speaking or seeing. Seek prompt medical advice for a headache after head injury, a new rash with fever, worsening pain, or inability to keep fluids down. Assessment is also sensible when the headache persists after other cold symptoms improve or repeatedly interrupts sleep.
