What should you know about the beginning stages of rhinophyma?

Rhinophyma is a gradual thickening and reshaping of nasal skin and underlying oil-gland tissue, commonly associated with Rosacea. In an early phase, the nose may look red between flushes, feel coarser, or show pores more clearly. The tip or sides can become slightly fuller without a dramatic change in outline.

Those signs are not specific. Acne, sebaceous enlargement, irritation, sun damage, and other growths can also alter texture. A clinician examines the surface and checks whether the change is stable, spreading, tender, crusted, or bleeding.

Arrange a dermatology review when nasal texture or shape is changing, even if the change is subtle. Use gentle cleansing, moisturiser, and sun protection; avoid squeezing pores, harsh exfoliation, and products that repeatedly sting. Treating associated rosacea may calm inflammation, although it may not reverse established tissue thickening.

If reshaping is needed, a specialist may discuss CO2 Laser Resurfacing or Electrosurgery. These procedures remove or reduce excess tissue in different ways, so healing, wound care, pigment change, and recurrence should be covered before treatment.

Seek prompt assessment for a rapidly changing lump, an ulcer, repeated bleeding, a non-healing crust, marked pain, pus, or sudden swelling. Urgent care is appropriate for fever with spreading redness or swelling around the eyes. These features need evaluation rather than being attributed to early rhinophyma.
