Rheumatoid arthritis in the knee

The knee contains a joint lining that can become inflamed in RA. This may produce a puffy feeling, warmth, reduced range of motion, and stiffness after rest. Symptoms can come and go or continue, and other joints may be involved at the same time. Knee symptoms alone do not prove RA; an assessment looks at the whole joint pattern, medical history, examination, and sometimes imaging or blood tests.

Pain on stairs, difficulty rising from a chair, or a knee that cannot fully bend or straighten are useful functional details to record. Tell the clinician whether the knee gives way or locks.

Arrange an appointment if knee swelling or stiffness persists or interferes with walking. Until then, choose low-impact movement within comfort, avoid sudden twisting, and use support if needed for safety. A wrapped cool pack may ease a hot swollen knee; gentle movement can help stiffness after rest. Discuss anti-inflammatory medication with a clinician, especially if you have other medical conditions or take regular medicines.

Get urgent medical help for a suddenly hot, very swollen knee with fever, severe pain after an injury, inability to bear weight, or a rapidly worsening loss of movement. These signs can indicate infection, significant injury, or another problem needing prompt treatment. A gradual but persistent change still deserves a planned review.

Ask whether the knee findings fit inflammatory arthritis, whether fluid or imaging assessment is needed, how to exercise safely, and what treatment could protect walking and joint function.
