What should you know about reverse alopecia areata?

Alopecia areata is an immune-related condition in which follicles can enter a period of shedding, often creating smooth bald patches. Regrowth may begin with fine, pale hairs and gradually regain thickness or colour, but the course can be uneven. New patches, nail changes, eyebrow loss, or widespread shedding deserve assessment.

Photograph the scalp in consistent lighting and note when each patch appeared, whether it itches or scales, and whether hair is returning. A dermatologist can distinguish alopecia areata from infection, traction, scarring disorders, or other causes. Options may include topical corticosteroids, steroid injection into the skin, oral corticosteroid treatment, or JAK inhibitor treatment.

Seek assessment for rapidly expanding patches, scalp pain, scale, pus, bleeding, or scarring. Arrange prompt care if eyelashes or eyebrows fall out, hair loss is widespread, or new symptoms appear. Sudden extensive shedding should not be assumed to be alopecia areata without examination.

Ask how the diagnosis was confirmed, whether follicles show scarring, what regrowth to watch for, and how relapse would be handled.
