Retin-A is a brand name associated with tretinoin, also called all-trans retinoic acid. A generic product uses the same active ingredient, although its cream, gel, lotion, strength, and inactive ingredients may differ between products. Tretinoin is applied to the skin rather than taken by mouth.

It may be prescribed for acne and may also be selected for sun-related changes in skin texture or tone. Improvement is gradual, and irritation can be more noticeable when treatment starts or when the product is used too often.
