What to do about restless legs

Short answer
When an urge to move or uncomfortable feeling begins, changing position and walking briefly may help. Gentle calf stretches, massage, or a warm shower can also be useful. These steps ease symptoms for some people but do not explain why they occur.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding the pattern
Restless legs often appears during sitting or lying down and may be more troublesome in the evening. It can affect sleep and concentration. Restless Legs Syndrome is one possible explanation, while Iron Deficiency Anaemia, chronic kidney disease, peripheral neuropathy, pregnancy, or a medicine effect may also need consideration. Having restless legs does not by itself identify one underlying condition.
A useful daily plan
Record when symptoms occur, what you were doing, and whether movement helped. Keep a steady sleep schedule, take movement breaks during long periods of sitting, and limit caffeine near bedtime. Review new medicines with a pharmacist or doctor rather than stopping them yourself. Arrange a primary-care review if the problem is frequent; blood tests or cause-focused treatment may be appropriate.
Know when to get help
Seek routine care if symptoms are affecting sleep, travel, work, or your mood. Get urgent help for a leg that suddenly becomes swollen, hot, red, or very painful, or for chest pain, breathlessness, new weakness, or trouble walking. These symptoms are not typical reasons to manage restless legs alone.
Questions to bring
Tell your doctor how the sensations feel, when they start, how sleep is affected, and what relieves them. Ask whether iron stores, kidney function, nerve symptoms, or a medicine review should be checked.
