Short answer

Restless legs during pregnancy can often be eased with gentle activity, stretching and a regular sleep routine, while ongoing or severe symptoms should be reviewed by your maternity team.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the sensation may indicate

You may notice an uncomfortable urge to move, crawling or tingling feelings, or a deep ache that starts while resting and improves briefly when you move. Pregnancy-related changes can make sleep and leg sensations more difficult. Iron Deficiency Anaemia may contribute, and a clinician may also consider Peripheral Neuropathy or Chronic Kidney Disease when the history suggests it. Having restless legs does not by itself reveal which explanation applies.

Comfort measures and safe review

Take short, comfortable walks during the day if approved for your pregnancy, and stretch your calves gently before bed. Massage, a warm bath and a quiet sleep environment may be useful. Avoid prolonged sitting where possible, and keep a note of triggers and sleep loss. Check all supplements, medicines and herbal remedies with your maternity clinician. They may assess iron status and discuss Iron Supplementation if testing supports it.

Warning signs that need prompt help

Tell your maternity team if symptoms are persistent, worsening, or making daily activities and sleep difficult. Seek urgent assessment for sudden swelling, redness, heat or strong pain in one leg, especially alongside breathlessness or chest pain. Pregnancy concerns such as fainting, heavy bleeding, severe headache or reduced fetal movement also need prompt maternity advice and should not be explained away as restless legs.

What to ask

Could low iron or another health problem be involved? Which tests are appropriate? Are my current supplements suitable, and what should I do if the symptoms prevent sleep?

Questions people ask

Yes, especially when symptoms affect sleep or daily function; your clinician can review possible contributors and suitable options.

Could restless legs be caused by low iron?

Iron deficiency can contribute, but testing is needed before deciding whether iron treatment is appropriate.
