Short answer

Restless legs with diabetes need a careful symptom review because nerve changes and other treatable causes can overlap.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Clue for neuropathy
Burning or reduced feeling that does not reliably improve with movement
Clue for restless legs
An urge to move triggered by rest and eased temporarily by activity

Possible links with diabetes

Diabetes can be associated with peripheral neuropathy, which may cause burning, tingling, reduced feeling, or pain in the feet and legs. These sensations can resemble restless legs but do not always improve when you move. Restless legs syndrome itself commonly presents with an urge to move that starts or worsens during rest and settles temporarily with activity.

Chronic kidney disease, iron deficiency anaemia, sleep disruption, and medicines may also matter. Restless legs is a common presentation of restless legs syndrome, but leg sensations in someone with diabetes do not automatically mean that syndrome or a diabetes complication.

Steps worth taking

Describe whether symptoms are worse at rest, whether walking helps, and whether there is numbness or burning. Check your feet regularly for blisters, cuts, colour change, or areas you cannot feel, and use footwear that protects them. Follow your agreed diabetes plan and do not alter prescribed medicines based on symptoms alone.

A clinician may examine circulation and sensation, review medicines, and check iron and kidney-related blood tests. Iron supplementation should follow confirmed deficiency and professional advice rather than self-treatment.

When to seek care

Seek urgent assessment for a new foot wound, spreading redness, a hot or swollen leg, sudden weakness, a cold or pale foot, or severe pain with reduced sensation. Contact your diabetes team promptly for signs of infection or a rapidly changing foot. Make a routine appointment when night symptoms repeatedly disturb sleep or daytime activity.

Questions for your doctor

Do my symptoms fit restless legs syndrome, peripheral neuropathy, or another cause? Should sensation, circulation, iron stores, and kidney function be checked? Could any medicine be contributing? What foot-care checks and symptom treatments are appropriate?

Questions people ask

Does diabetes always explain restless legs?

No. Diabetes may coexist with several causes of leg sensations, so the pattern needs individual assessment.

Why mention foot checks?

Reduced sensation can make injuries harder to notice, so regular inspection helps identify problems early.
