What should you know about a resting electrocardiogram?

A clinician places adhesive electrodes on your chest and usually your limbs. Wires connect them to the ECG machine, which turns the heart’s electrical signals into waveforms. The tracing can help assess an irregular rhythm, a fast or slow rate, or patterns that may accompany conditions such as angina, atrial fibrillation, or heart failure.

A resting ECG covers only the moment of recording. A normal tracing does not explain every episode of chest discomfort, palpitations, or fainting. The result is considered with your symptoms, examination, medicines, and other investigations rather than read in isolation.

Wear clothing that permits access to the chest, arms, and legs. Avoid applying oily creams to the electrode areas on the day of the test, and mention sensitive skin or an implanted device. Lie relaxed, breathe normally, and keep still while the tracing is taken. The test does not exercise the heart and normally does not require recovery time. Ask when and how the result will be discussed.

Do not wait for a routine ECG appointment if you have severe or persistent chest pressure, severe breathlessness, fainting, sudden weakness, or palpitations with collapse or marked dizziness. Seek emergency help for these symptoms. If discomfort or palpitations come and go, note their timing, triggers, duration, and associated symptoms so the clinician can decide whether further monitoring is needed.

Ask what prompted the ECG, whether your medicines affect the test, what the tracing shows, and whether you need monitoring during activity or symptoms. Ask which warning signs should prompt an earlier review.
