Short answer

Repeated mastitis deserves a clinical review to identify ongoing inflammation, feeding difficulties, or infection and to make a plan for safer recovery.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Mastitis
Inflammation that may or may not involve infection
During recovery
Use gentle care and avoid forceful massage
Recurrent symptoms
Need review of feeding, breast tissue, and treatment response

What repeated episodes can mean

Mastitis is inflammation in breast tissue. It may cause a painful, swollen, warm area and sometimes fever or flu-like symptoms. Repeated episodes can be related to milk stasis, breast pressure, nipple injury, an ineffective latch, or inflammation that has not fully settled. Breast pain and painful breastfeeding can then make feeding harder, creating more fullness and discomfort.

The same symptoms do not always have the same cause. A clinician may ask which breast is affected, how quickly symptoms appear, whether you feel unwell, and what feeding or expressing pattern was in place. Persistent or recurrent changes may need examination rather than repeated self-treatment.

Managing the breast gently

Feed or express according to your baby’s usual needs and comfort; repeated pumping to empty the breast can aggravate swelling. Use a cool pack, rest, a supportive bra, and suitable pain relief if advised. Avoid deep massage, tight clothing, and abrupt changes to feeding. A lactation consultation can review attachment, positioning, pump use, and any nipple damage. Take prescribed treatment exactly as directed and complete it unless your prescriber changes the plan.

When to seek medical care

Contact a clinician promptly if fever, chills, worsening redness, increasing pain, or a growing firm area develops, or if you feel significantly unwell. Seek urgent help for confusion, faintness, severe weakness, or difficulty keeping fluids down. If symptoms do not improve as expected or keep returning, arrange a review to check for an abscess or another explanation.

What to ask

Ask whether the episode appears inflammatory or infectious, whether a breast examination or imaging is needed, and how to continue feeding safely. Ask which changes in latch, pump use, clothing, or routine could lower pressure on the breast.

Questions people ask

Can I breastfeed during mastitis?

Many people can continue feeding in a comfortable pattern, but a clinician can tailor advice if pain is severe or treatment is needed.

Why should repeated mastitis be checked?

A review can identify persistent inflammation, latch problems, infection, an abscess, or another cause of recurring breast changes.
