What should you know about repeated folliculitis?

Folliculitis can look like small red or tender bumps, pus-filled spots, itching, or soreness centred on hairs. Repeated episodes may be associated with shaving, friction, sweating, tight clothing, blocked follicles, or an infection. Ingrown hairs and other types of skin bumps can look similar, so appearance alone does not establish the cause. Scalp involvement may feel particularly itchy.

Pause shaving, waxing, or close trimming over active spots and avoid picking them. Wash gently after sweating, keep razors clean, and reduce rubbing from clothing or equipment. A clinician may recommend an antiseptic wash, topical treatment, or antibiotics for skin infection depending on the examination. Do not reuse leftover medication or share towels and razors.

Arrange a dermatology review when episodes keep returning, spread, leave scars, or fail to settle with sensible skin care. Seek prompt medical attention for rapidly worsening redness, marked pain, warmth, drainage, fever, or feeling unwell, because these features can signal a deeper or spreading infection.

Ask whether the bumps are folliculitis or ingrown hairs, whether a swab or other assessment is useful, which hair-removal habits may be contributing, and how long to use any prescribed topical or oral treatment.
