What should you know about repeated conjunctivitis?

Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the thin surface covering the eye and eyelid. Redness, watering, itching and Eye Discharge may occur. Viral or bacterial infection can spread between people, while allergy, dry eyes, blocked drainage or exposure to smoke and cosmetics can produce similar-looking symptoms.

The timing, whether one or both eyes are affected, the colour and amount of discharge, and whether symptoms return after treatment can help a clinician identify the likely cause. Redness alone does not establish an infection.

Wash hands after touching the eyes, avoid sharing towels or eye cosmetics, and clean discharge with fresh cotton or clean water for each wipe. Do not wear contact lenses while the eye is red or producing discharge, and replace lenses or cases as advised by an eye professional.
