Removing sun spots on the face: what to know

Sun spots are usually flat, tan-to-brown areas linked with repeated ultraviolet exposure. They commonly appear on exposed facial skin and can sit alongside other signs of sun-damaged skin, such as an uneven skin tone. A facial dark patch should not be labelled a sun spot from appearance alone.

A spot that is changing, uneven in colour, becoming thicker, crusting, bleeding, or persistently itching needs assessment before cosmetic treatment. Treating an uncertain lesion can alter its surface and delay the right diagnosis.

A dermatologist may discuss a chemical peel, IPL photofacial, picosecond laser treatment, or carefully selected lesion treatment after examining the skin. Each option acts differently on pigment and can cause temporary redness, sensitivity, darkening, or lightening. Skin tone, recent tanning, medicines, and a history of pigment changes all affect the plan.

Use broad-spectrum sun protection, seek shade, and wear a hat when outdoors. Gentle cleansing and moisturising support the skin barrier after treatment. Do not pick a healing area or combine strong exfoliants with a procedure unless your clinician specifically advises it.

Book a skin assessment for a new or changing facial spot, especially if it has an irregular outline, several colours, crusting, bleeding, or a sore that does not heal. Seek prompt advice if a treated area develops increasing pain, spreading redness, pus, blistering, or marked swelling. Cosmetic removal should wait until a concerning feature has been reviewed.
