What toothpaste can do to skin

Toothpaste is formulated for teeth, not for a raised lesion. Flavouring agents, abrasives and other ingredients may cause burning, dryness, redness or contact dermatitis when left on skin. The resulting irritation can obscure the lesion and may leave temporary colour change or a scar. It also does not establish that the growth is a skin tag rather than a wart, mole or another lesion.

What to do instead

If toothpaste has been applied, wash it off gently with lukewarm water and avoid rubbing, picking or adding other home remedies. For removal, have the growth examined first. A clinician may offer Skin Tag Removal or consider Cryotherapy (Lesion Removal) or Electrosurgery according to the lesion and the surrounding skin.

When to seek care

Arrange a review when a growth is changing, repeatedly catching on clothing, painful, crusted, bleeding without trauma or unlike your other skin tags. Seek prompt advice after toothpaste exposure if swelling, blistering, intense pain, spreading redness, pus or an open sore appears.
