How to Remove Red Moles

How the structures involved in Cherry Angioma differ from normal

Short answer

Removing a red mole should begin with a clinical examination, because a spot that looks like a cherry angioma may need a different diagnosis.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a red mole may be

Many small bright-red or purple-red spots are cherry angiomas, which are clusters of small blood vessels in the skin. They can be smooth or slightly raised and may bleed if scratched. The label red mole is a description, not a diagnosis, so a clinician may inspect the colour, border, surface, and pattern with magnification. A changing, crusted, irregular, or repeatedly bleeding spot should not be removed cosmetically before it has been assessed.

Removal options

If the spot is confirmed as suitable for removal, a clinician may discuss Pulsed Dye Laser Treatment or Electrosurgery. The first uses targeted light to affect blood vessels; the second uses controlled electrical energy to treat the lesion. The area may be red, tender, crusted, or temporarily changed in colour while it heals. Do not cut, burn, or tie off a red mole at home. Follow wound-care advice and protect the treated area from sun exposure.

When to seek care

Book a prompt skin assessment if a red spot grows, changes colour or shape, develops a crust, bleeds without clear injury, or fails to heal. Seek urgent help for bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, or for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, or fever after a procedure.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what makes the spot look like a cherry angioma and whether it needs monitoring or sampling. Ask which removal method suits its size, depth, and location, what healing changes are expected, and how to care for the site afterward. Mention medicines or conditions that affect bleeding or healing.

Questions people ask

Can I remove a red mole at home?

Home removal can cause bleeding, infection, burns, and scarring, and it can delay diagnosis of a different lesion. Arrange professional assessment instead.

Do all red moles need treatment?

No. A confirmed cherry angioma may be left alone when it is not bothersome; removal is generally considered for irritation, bleeding, or cosmetic concern.
