How to remove dark elbows

Elbow skin is exposed to pressure, rubbing, dryness, and repeated minor irritation. This can make the surface rough and leave darker colour after inflammation, known as Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation. A symmetrical change without symptoms can differ from a patch that is itchy, scaly, painful, or spreading.

A clinician may inspect texture and colour and ask about kneeling, leaning on desks, eczema, psoriasis, and products used on the area. The cause matters because aggressive lightening can create more irritation and pigment.

Use a fragrance-free moisturiser regularly, avoid leaning on the elbows, and wash with a gentle cleanser. Do not use abrasive scrubs or household acids. A clinician may recommend a targeted topical product, including Topical Retinoids, when suitable; these can irritate and require careful instructions. A Chemical Peel may be considered for selected pigment concerns after the skin is calm, but it is not appropriate for every tone, texture, or active rash.

Book an assessment if the darkening is new, rapidly spreading, thickened, very itchy, painful, cracked, bleeding, or present with changes elsewhere.
