What should you know about relieving croup cough?

Short answer
Relieving a croup cough involves keeping your child calm, offering fluids, and arranging medical advice when breathing is noisy or difficult.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical sound
- A harsh, barking cough
- Helpful position
- Upright and calm
- Key warning
- Noisy breathing at rest
What croup means
Croup is an upper-airway illness that can make the voice box and nearby tissues swell. The cough often sounds barking and may be worse at night. A hoarse voice, runny nose or fever can occur too. Crying and distress can make the noisy breathing more pronounced, so reassurance is part of care.
Ways to ease the cough
Hold your child upright and speak softly. Offer frequent small sips of water or milk if they can swallow comfortably. Let them rest, and check them regularly, including during sleep. Avoid forcing food, using steam or placing them in a smoky room; hot steam can cause burns and does not reliably settle airway swelling. Use only medicines recommended for your child’s age and situation, and ask a clinician before giving cough medicines.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help if breathing is hard, the skin pulls in between the ribs, the lips look blue or grey, your child cannot swallow saliva, becomes unusually sleepy, or pauses between breaths. Noisy breathing while resting needs prompt medical assessment. A clinician may prescribe treatment to reduce airway swelling; do not wait for home measures if symptoms are worsening.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the symptoms fit croup, which treatment is suitable, how to measure a fever, and what changes should prompt urgent review. Mention previous breathing problems, allergies, medicines and whether the cough is present when your child is calm.

Questions people ask
Should a child with croup breathe steam?
Steam can burn a child and is not a dependable treatment. Use calm reassurance, an upright position and fluids instead.
Can croup return after improving?
Symptoms can change over the same illness, especially overnight. Continue observation and seek care if breathing becomes noisy at rest or difficult.
