Short answer

Relief for hand eczema starts with restoring the skin barrier, avoiding triggers, and using clinician-recommended treatment when inflammation, itching, or cracking continues.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Barrier care
Apply fragrance-free emollient after washing and whenever skin feels dry
Common triggers
Soaps, detergents, wet work, gloves, and chemicals
Infection clues
Worsening warmth, pain, swelling, pus, or crusting

What hand eczema can look like

Hand eczema may cause dry, rough, red, scaly, itchy, sore, or cracked skin. Water, soaps, detergents, solvents, frequent sanitising, gloves, metals, and wet work can weaken the barrier or trigger contact inflammation. Atopic dermatitis can also affect the hands, and the appearance may overlap with other rashes, so persistent symptoms deserve an assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Scratching can deepen cracks and increase irritation. Darker marks may remain after inflammation settles; this is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Crusting, spreading redness, warmth, pus, or increasing pain can suggest infection and needs prompt review.

Steps that protect the hands

Use a fragrance-free emollient often, especially after washing, and choose a thick ointment or cream when the skin is very dry. Wash with lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser, then pat dry. Wear protective gloves for wet or chemical tasks, with a comfortable cotton layer if advised, and replace damp gloves.

A clinician may prescribe an anti-inflammatory treatment or investigate allergic contact triggers. Use it exactly as directed and do not apply someone else’s medicine to broken skin. Keep nails short and use a cool compress instead of scratching when itching flares.

When to seek care

Arrange medical review when cracks keep reopening, sleep is disrupted by itching, work is difficult, or moisturiser alone is not enough. Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, yellow crusting, fever, or severe pain. Urgent help is needed for facial swelling or breathing difficulty.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether this is atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, or another condition; which products or tasks may be triggers; what treatment is safe on cracked skin; and how to prevent dark marks and flares.

Questions people ask

Should I stop washing my hands?

No. Wash gently with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser, dry carefully, and apply emollient promptly.

Why do eczema cracks keep returning?

Ongoing exposure to irritants, inflammation, and a weakened skin barrier can keep the cycle going, so trigger control and medical treatment may both be needed.
