What should you know about regressed melanoma?

Short answer

Regressed melanoma has areas where tumour cells or pigment have partially disappeared, so careful examination and staging remain important.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Regression
Partial loss of tumour cells or pigment in a lesion
Assessment
Examination, dermoscopy, pathology, and staging may all contribute

What regression can mean

On the skin, regression may look like a pale, white, grey, pink, or scar-like zone within or beside a changing pigmented lesion. A dermoscopic examination can show features that suggest loss of pigment and altered skin structure. Regression can make the visible lesion look smaller than the original process, which is why the clinical history and the surrounding skin matter.

A biopsy examines the tissue that is sampled. If regression is suspected, the clinician may consider the lesion's most informative area and whether further surgery or staging is needed. A diagnosis of melanoma is based on the pathologist's findings together with the examination, not on fading alone.

What to do next

Arrange a prompt review with a dermatologist, especially if the spot has changed in colour, outline, size, or texture. Bring older photographs if you have them and mention when the change began, whether the area has bled or crusted, and whether a previous biopsy or removal was performed.

Management may include a biopsy or Surgical Excision, followed by discussion of the confirmed depth and other pathology features. Depending on the findings, a Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy or additional Skin Cancer Surgery may be considered. Treatment decisions are individual and should follow the pathology report.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical advice for a rapidly changing lesion, repeated bleeding, an open sore that does not heal, marked tenderness, or a new firm lump near the site. New neurological symptoms such as severe headache, weakness, confusion, or a seizure need emergency assessment rather than routine skin review.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which biopsy area was sampled, whether the report describes regression, and whether the margins are clear. Ask what follow-up schedule fits your result, whether lymph-node assessment is relevant, and which new skin or general symptoms should prompt an earlier appointment.

Questions people ask

Does fading prove that melanoma has gone away?

No. Fading can reflect regression, but it cannot establish that all melanoma cells have disappeared.

Can regression affect treatment planning?

It can make the visible lesion underestimate the original process, so pathology and specialist assessment guide the plan.
