What should you know about refurbished DEXA scanners?

DEXA, also called DXA, uses low-dose X-rays to estimate bone mineral density. Refurbished equipment has usually been previously used and then inspected, repaired, recalibrated or updated. The label alone does not tell you whether the scanner is appropriate for a particular patient or whether its measurements can be compared reliably over time. Image quality, positioning, analysis software, detector condition and calibration all influence the report. A scan should be performed by trained staff who can explain preparation, positioning and the result.

A bone density result is interpreted alongside age, medical history, previous fractures and medicines. It is not a complete assessment of bone health by itself.

Ask the imaging provider when the unit was serviced, whether calibration and quality-control records are current, and whether replacement parts or software updates are supported. Confirm that the facility can provide a written report and retain earlier images or results for comparison. Tell staff if you may be pregnant, recently had a contrast examination, or cannot lie still comfortably. Wear clothing without metal where possible and follow the centre’s instructions. Bring previous reports and a list of medicines, especially treatments that affect bone strength.

A DEXA scan itself is usually a planned test rather than an emergency. Seek prompt medical advice after a fall with severe pain, inability to bear weight, a new deformity, or suspected fracture; do not wait for a routine scan. Contact the imaging centre if equipment faults, unexpected movement or poor positioning interrupted the test, because the report may need review or the scan may need repeating.
